Forceful, with impression of age and reality. Well proportioned tree with consistent curved trunk. Leaves, flowers or needles in proportion to size of tree.     

 Lower Trunk and Surface Roots

Roots extending out on all side but not directly to front and hugging soil. Roots match general character of the tree, curved or straight.Surface roots barely visible over rim of pot Trunk rises from pot at an angle, either left or right.    

 Trunk

Consistent taper base to tip.. Visible 2/3 of tree height. Consistent curvature    

 Branches

Follow the 1-2-3 pattern (left, right, back or right, left, back) side branches leave the trunk on the outside of a curve and should curve or bend to the same degree as the trunk with back branches shorter than side branches. Largest diameter branch lowest. Degree of branch ramification is important    

 Apex

Directly over base or within 10 degrees. Well formed and bowing towards front    

 Silhouette

Triangular with visual mass contained within pot as viewed from the front. Tree is balanced over pot. Branches extend to edge of pot or slightly beyond. Side silhouette triangular with back branches shorter than side branches.    

 Container

Shallow, pot depth should be approximately equal to the diameter of the trunk at the transition of the root neck to the trunk when possible and depending on species. Rectangular or oval pot, length 2/3 of major dimension, height or width. Tree potted off center. Deciduous trees in glazed pots in harmony with leaves, fruit or flowers. Evergreen in unglazed pot. Oval or rectangular - trunk placed slightly off center line to rear and about 1/3 of the length of the pot. Square or round - plant in center of slightly off center. Longest branches of composition are placed to cover the greater area of soil. General pot condition and pot's harmony with the tree    

 Other

Wiring neat and unobtrusive with no wire marks. Plant healthy with good leaf color and free of insects and disease. Carefully groomed with roots, trunk and branches fee of dirt and moss. Ground cover, if used, is free of weeds and debris. Pruning and trimming appropriate for tree and species. No unsightly pruning scars. Jins or shari neat and natural looking.
