Chinese elm The elm forest was originally created by Timm Patterson in 1987. The trees at that time were 15 years old.

Trident maple In the early 1980's this maple was imported from Japan. It was twelve inches tall at that time, but already trained as a bonsai. The owner purchased it from a rooftop garden of one of the major department stores in Tokyo.

Cotoneaster This shohin is fifteen years old, and has been in training for thirteen years.

Shimpaku juniper This seven tree forest is from rooted cuttings planted in 1976.

Ficus retusa This fig tree came to the NW via New Orleans in 1985. It was purchased at the BCI convention of that year. It's age at that time is unknown. In January of 2001 it was in a house that burned down. The top eight inches of the tree was completely black and had to be cut off. It seems to have recovered nicely, in May of this year it was leaf pruned to display the small foliage for this exhibit. Can we call this tree truly a Phoenix?
